guided tour to Canterbury from Cambridge.
Visit
an historic medieval town home to the most important cathedral
of the Anglican faith, the seat of the Church of England. |
| Canterbury |
| The
small town of Canterbury to the east of London has long been
a place of importance. The Cathedral's history goes back to
597AD when St Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great as
a missionary, established his seat in Canterbury. In 1170
Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in Canterbury
Cathedral making the town the focus of christian pilgrimmage,
immortalised in the medieval writings of Geoffrey Chaucer's
Canterbury Tales. The cathedral is magnificent, located in
the heart of the town centre, it oversees the goings-on in
the medieval
streets around. WWII bombs destoyed some of the town's
core but still today the town has considerable charm. |
