What can I see?

  • Canterbury Cathedral is the seat of the Church of England, the most important cathedral in Britain
  • Leeds Castle, described as the "loveliest castle in the world"
Canterbury is home to the most important cathedral in the UK and to the most powerful clergyman in Britain, the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Cathedral is the place where Archbishop Thomas a Becket was assassinated in 1170. The town is small, compact and full of interesting sights with ancient buildings housing modern shops. Leeds Castle is set in the centre of a lake. Enter the castle, get lost in the maze, wonder at the bizarre birds in the aviaries and stroll through the tranquil gardens. A fabulous day of historical intrigue and rich in English culture.

Plan for the day

Leaving Cambridge, we head south around the eastern outskirts of London, across the majestic Queen Elizabeth II bridge over the River Thames to arrive at Leeds Castle mid-morning. Then on to Canterbury where every visitor should enter the city's major attraction, Canterbury Cathedral. Learn more about the town and its most famous historical inhabitant, Geoffrey Chaucer by visiting The Canterbury Tales,an attraction celebrating the life and characters of Geoffrey Chaucer and a window to the writings and history of mediaeval Britain. We arrive back in Cambridge early evening.
