What can I see?

  • Audley End, a mansion frequented by royalty
  • Medieval Lavenham with its crooked houses
  • Bury St Edmunds, the cradle of british law
Explore the backroads of the East Anglian countryside and experience rural and historical Britain. Visit the pretty market town of Saffron Walden or the wonderful stately home of Audley End. Then on into Suffolk, along the beautiful rural scenes depicted in the paintings of Constable and Gainsborough en route to Lavenham, a mediaeval wool town with its exquisite architecture. Finally, a brief stop in Bury St.Edmunds to visit the location of the signing of the Magna Carta - the beginning of British law.

Plan for the day

We leave Cambridge for Saffron Walden. On arrival you have the choice to visit Audley End, a wonderful stately home once frequented by royalty with its fabulous interiors and Capability Brown-designed gardens. Alternatively, spend an hour or so browsing the many shops of the market town. Then on to Lavenham winding our way through the sleepy villages of Clare and Cavendish with their pastel-coloured thatched houses. In Lavenham we walk through the quaint streets to the central square to sample its exquisite architecture. Finally, we stop in Bury St. Edmunds at the abbey gardens to see the remains of the old abbey where the Magna Carta was signed by King John in the 13th century.
