What
can I see?
- Salisbury,
a pretty market town, with the tallest spire of any cathedral
in the UK
- The
best surviving copy of the Magna Carta
- The
wonderful ruins of Old Sarum, old Salisbury
| |
|
Salisbury,
a pretty market town, boasts the highest spire of any cathedral
in the UK and is a pretty market town with many interesting shops.
Old Sarum is an extraordinary
place with an extraordinary history. This great earthwork, with
its huge banks and ditches, lies near Salisbury on the edge of
the Wiltshire chalk plains. Today
the remains of the prehistoric fortress the Norman palace, castle
and cathedral, evoke powerful memories of the people associated
with it.

Plan
for the day
|
The
drive to Salisbury is a long one so there will be a refreshment
stop en route. On arrival in Salisbury, we we will visit the wonderful
cathedral housing
the best remaining copy of the Magna Carta in existence. During
the day you have the option to join a free trip to Old Sarum, Old
Salisbury, overlooking the town.
Originally created by Iron Age people in about 500BC, it was later
occupied by Romans, Saxons and in 1070, William the Conqueror paid
off his army here. In
the late afternoon we depart for the journey back to Cambridge to
arrive early evening. |
