Stonehenge is the oldest monument in Europe. Scientists believe that the structure, built by Neolithic Man, is dedicated to the understanding of the stars. Salisbury, a pretty market town, boasts the highest spire of any cathedral in the UK and is a pretty market town with many interesting shops.

Plan for the day

First stop, Stonehenge. The monument at Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site. It is 5000 years old and bears testimony to the great understanding our ancestors had of the stars. Located on the open, rolling landscape of Salisbury Plain, Stonehenge will capture your imagination. Learn about Neolithic cultures and marvel at their ability to bring the lintel stones over 400km from South Wales to complete what scientists believe to be an astronomical temple. Take the audio guided tour of the site. Then on to Salisbury, with its wonderful cathedral housing the best remaining copy of the Magna Carta in existence before making the journey back to Cambridge.
