Hill, Europe's largest man-made prehistoric hill at Avebury |
| Stonehenge,
the oldest monument in Europe |
| The
Magna Carta at the UK's tallest cathedral |

Scientists
believe that Stonehenge was built 5000 years ago by Neolithic Man
as a spiritual temple to understand the seasons and the stars. Located
on Salisbury Plain, it is an awesome place of mystery and myth.
Avebury, an enormous stone circle, predates Stonehenge and is a
fascinating starting point for the day. Salisbury, a pretty market
town, boasts the highest spire of any cathedral in the UK and is
a pretty market town with many interesting shops.

Plan
for the day |
| |
First
stop, Avebury. A circular walk around the stones circumnavigating
the village of Avebury. Then on past Silbury Hill, the highest man-made
prehistoric hill in the world. Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site
located on the open, rolling landscape of Salisbury Plain. Learn
about Neolithic cultures and marvel at their ability to bring the
horizontal lintel stones over 400km from South Wales to complete
the temple. Take the audio guided tour of the site. Then on to Salisbury,
with its wonderful cathedral housing the best remaining copy of
the Magna Carta in existence, before making the journey back to
Cambridge. |
