What can I see?

  • Stratford-upon-Avon is the birthplace of William Shakespeare
  • Warwick Castle is an imposing medieval castle with a host of visitor attractions
Stratford-upon-Avon is a small, pretty town on the banks of the River Avon, famous worldwide for being the home to one of the most important playwrights of the English language, William Shakespeare. Warwick is famous for its castle which has been an important fixture in British history for over 800 years, witness to battle, intrigue, power and the excesses of the aristocracy. The Castle has been transformed to show a Britain of 700, 300 and 100 years ago.

Plan for the day

First, we head for Warwick to visit its wonderful castle. Permanent exhibits include mediaeval armoury and equipment for torture in the dungeon. Alternatively, climb to the top of the castle walls for fabulous views over Warwick and the River Avon below, or wander in the beautiful castle grounds. Visits in the summer months may coincide with festivals of falconry or jousting, but whatever time of year you visit, there is much to see and do. Afterwards we head for Stratford. Visit the birthplace museum or join your Roots driver-guide for an informal guided walk of the town which includes a visit to Shakespeare's grave in Holy Trinity Church. You will have free time to explore the rest of Stratford, including the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre, before returning to Cambridge in the early evening.
