What can I see?

  • Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world
  • Eton College, the school attended by Prince William and Prince Harry
  • Kew Royal Botanical Gardens, a World heritage Site, is arguably the most important botanical conservation and research gardens in the world
  • Glasshouses representing all habitats on Earth

Whatever the season, there is always something to see at Kew. Established in 1759, it now grows up to 33,000 species in plantations and glasshouses. The Palm House, the most impressive of the glasshouses, was built in the 1840s, a testimony to Victorian society's desire for knowledge. But it is not the largest - that honour goes to the Temperate House which includes the largest indoor palms in the world. The Chinese pagoda (above) is also a main attraction at this World Heritage Site. Windsor is home to the largest occupied castle in the world and an official residence of The Queen. It contains a royal palace with wonderful State Apartments used for ceremonies and a magnificent chapel housing the tombs of ten sovereigns of England.

Plan for the day

We head first to SW London, to the gardens at Kew. On arrival, there will be a short introductory talk to explain the importance of the Gardens and to put what you are about to see in context. Free time to spend exploring the many glasshouses representing almost all habitats on Earth and the extensive gardens. Then on into central London through some of the more salubrious districts of the capital where there will be free time to spend enjoying sightseeing or shopping. Return to Cambridge early evening.
