What can I see?
  • Roman and Viking history in the walled city of York
  • York Minster, Britain's favourite cathedral
  • The Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, the tree in which Robin Hood reputedly hid from the Sheriff of Nottingham
York is one of the most important cities in British history. From the invading Vikings of over 1000 years ago to the present day, York has been at the forefront of Britain's cultural development. The city is famous for its walled city centre enclosing numerous narrow mediaeval streets housing a plethora of wonderful shops and tourist attractions, the highlight of which being York Minster, the seat of the Archbishop of York, Britain's favourite cathedral. Sherwood Forest, once an imposing wooded region, was the home of the legendary Robin Hood. Sample the delights of the forest and visit the Major Oak tree of Hood fame.

Plan for the day

We leave Cambridge early for the long journey to York. We break the journey at Sherwood Forest where we take a short forest walk to see the "Major Oak". There will be time for refreshments. On arrival in York in the late morning, you will have the chance to join your driver-guide for a free, informal walk around the city walls. (If the Viking Festival is on (February), there will be rowing races on the river, Viking costumes on the streets, Viking music piping across the city, and battle re-enactments at the castle.) If not, spend some time taking in the fabulous architecture of York Minster and climb to the top of the tower for great views. Alternatively, visit the National Railway Museum, the UK's largest exhibition of trains throughout the ages or go shopping in the wonderful mediaeval streets. York is an atmospheric place. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy it! We leave York late in the afternoon to arrive back in Cambridge mid-evening.
