The Norfolk Broads
Tour to the Norfolk Broads from Cambridge

The Norfolk Broads is a unique area of waterways near the East Anglian coast. It is a protected wetland with National Park status. The broads were created in the 14th and 15th centuries when the sea flooded into, and then receded from, the low lying marshy coast which had been dug up for peat over several centuries.

The area remained sparsely populated and relatively remote until the 1870s, when the railways first gave visitors easy access. Since then boating on the broads and the rivers which intersect them—a total of about 320 km (200 mi) of navigable water—has become a popular activity. Some parts of the area have been made into nature reserves for waterbirds.
